PIC to Receive $20,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

Posted on August 05, 2020

Honolulu, Hawai‘i—National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $84 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2020.  Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $20,000 to Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) for its tenth season of Pacific Heartbeat, a national public television series. This is one of 1015 grants nationwide that the agency has approved in this category.

“These awards demonstrate the resilience of the arts in America, showcasing not only the creativity of their arts projects but the organizations’ agility in the face of a national health crisis,” said Mary Anne Carter, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “We celebrate organizations like Pacific Islanders in Communications for providing opportunities for learning and engagement through the arts in these times.”

“PIC is honored to receive another grant from the National Endowment for the Arts of our series, Pacific Heartbeat.  The NEA supports media arts of the highest artistic excellence and we’re humbled to be among the 1015 recipients of an NEA grant this year.” – Executive Director, Leanne K. Ferrer

Pacific Heartbeat is a national public television series of critically acclaimed documentaries that provides an authentic glimpse into the real Pacific—its people, cultures, languages, music, and contemporary issues. From revealing exposés to rousing musical performances, the series features a diverse array of programs that will draw viewers into the heart and soul of Pacific Island culture.

Pacific Heartbeat is presented through a partnership between Pacific Islanders in Communications and PBS Hawaiʻi, and is distributed by Boston-based American Public Television (APT) and broadcast nationally on WORLD Channel (distributed by APT in partnership with WGBH & WNET), in addition to hundreds of scheduled broadcasts on local PBS stations.

Films are selected each year from among numerous submissions, including projects funded by PIC with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts.
