Skin Stories

July 2016

Tatau, kakau, moko, tattoo all translate the same. From across the Pacific the tattoo has inspired a global interest in body art and has played a major part in a Polynesian cultural renaissance.

The documentary, Skin Stories, which chronicles the art of tattoo in Polynesia, is a collection of stories and stunning images gathered from hotspots of Pacific tattoo.

Now traditional Polynesian tattoo is flourishing, the art has been rescued from the brink of extinction, by a generation of artists committed to its survival.

This landmark documentary reveals another layer of what it means to proudly wear the marks of tattoo. The skin stories revealed involve family, culture and heritage, told by trailblazers willing to carry on a tradition that was almost lost.
