Freelove and Blackbirds captures the colorful, complex inner and outer worlds of Samoan novelist Sia Figiel, whose groundbreaking work gives voice to the silenced experiences of girls and reveals a post-colonial Pacific society marked by love, violence, tradition and modernity, and whose own life journey has taken her from a Samoan village to decades abroad to her eventual return home as she attempts to navigate her bicultural identity, to understand her family history and past abuse, to manage her physical and mental health and ultimately to find healing.
