Taika Waititi to receive HIFF PIC Trailblazer Award - November 10 at the Halekulani
We are proud to present Taika Waititi with the HIFF Pacific Islanders in Communications Trailblazer Award! This new award is given to a cinema artist of Pacific Islander heritage who broadens the scope of Pacific Islander stories onto the world stage, producing award winning work in independent and global cinema, becoming a trendsetter in their field and a cultural ambassador that shines a spotlight on Pacific Islander culture in mainstream media. The Media Fund Application is now available. Please note that starting October 1, 2017, PIC will be accepting Media Fund Research and Development (R&D) applications on a rolling basis.
Submit your Documentary to American ReFramed
America ReFramed tells the many stories of a transforming American culture and its broad diversity. In these weekly 60- or 90-minute independent films, the series takes an unfiltered look at relevant domestic topics with personal storytelling tied to familiar and unfamiliar social themes in American lives.
THIRTEEN accepts proposals for limited series, single stand-alone programs that can be broadcast as specials, single programs that fit existing strands, and short program segments that can fit existing programs.
Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) National Mediamaker Program
BAVC's National MediaMaker Fellowship has provided in-kind training and support for independent artists at work on social-issue nonfiction film and multimedia projects, with a particular focus on supporting emerging artists and underserved communities. The Fellowship builds an engaged national community of creative media artists from diverse fields, increases their capacity for project completion and lasting impact, and inspires new partnerships and collaboration to support future work.

Native Lenses - ʻOiwi Optics - November 8
A Community Panel on Indigenous Film-making featuring Chris Eyre, Chris Kahunahana, & Donne Dawson, moderated by Leanne Ferrer
Help us welcome Native American filmmaker and scholar Chris Eyre (SMOKE SIGNALS, SKINS, the upcoming DEAD RIVER), who is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, and as of 2012, is chairman of the film department at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. He will be joined by his fellow Sundance alumnus and Native Hawaiian filmmaker Christopher Kahunahana (LAHAINA NOON, the upcoming WAIKIKI) on a frank discussion about the pursuits and challenges of telling native stories through the cinema lens. They will be accompanied by Hawaii State Film Commissioner Donne Dawson with PIC executive director Leanne Ferrer moderating, as they discuss the current state of indigenous filmmaking and how current models and technology may have potentially broken barriers. Is the time now?
